Location, Location, Location

I have made a mistake.

Might have a new business idea for these two

I remember an article I read some time ago in GamesTM about David Jaffe, the man who gave his ideas behind Kratos and God of War. He was only 25 when he entered the games industry. He was already something of a creator. He told of how he would build scenes in his garage and bring his imagination to life. Safe to say the man inspires me.

What happened for him though was what misled me in the ease in his progression. The vital part of what I understood lay ever so clear and yet escaped me so easily. I have recently relocated away from home to find a more secure and better paid job. I feel it was a success in that regard. I brought my life with me, including my girlfriend which proved a challenge for both us, however we overcame. I sit here now pondering over the last 6-7 months I have been here, and realised only now that I have made a mistake.

David spoke of how when he wanted to make his move, it turned out that the Santa Monica studio were "just around the corner" so he called them up to see if they had a position for testers. Lo and behold. 15 years later he has one of the top selling titles for PS3 end its glorious trilogy, only leaving me with a semi, hoping to one day have the same affect of men my age. Yes, I just said that.

See within the area I live (Essex, UK), I have looked for developers big and small and it turns out that I might have missed the dissagreement that took place between Essex and Video Games. Either that or (and I hope) my ability to search for developers and publishers alike, sucks. One way or another, this County is dryer than a nun's monkey-earhole. Turns out if I were to look to enter as a tester for anyone, the shortest journey is over at Ninja Theory in Cambridge, an uneventful 90 minute drive away. Wait, wait, wait. Before you start judging me for being lazy, I shall have you know I have applied, with full intention of doing 3 hours driving a day to be a tester. Did I get the job? Would I be writing this if I did?
What do you mean I'm bitter?

This is not the only thing that makes this a mistake. The last several months have been a challenge for so many reasons; reasons that only apply to another blog for when I was a teenager. I received a message from a friend of mine via Facebook, who happened to be working at Microsoft. Turns out the offices there in the good county of Berkshire, where I was before security and decent salary called, has spaces for testers coming up in January. I shall leave the picture to communicate the rest.

So here I am now, in a position wherein I moved out of house and home, to start "life" only to find that had I actually considered and researched where I was putting myself, who knows what I would have done. All I am saying kids is, do not make the same mistake I did. Look before you cross.

See you tomorrow.

  1. Life is about the journey not the destination. You're on a journey and have had new experiences. You are clearly disappointed but don't lose heart. You will have learnt stuff, increased awareness, and are still young. Keep up with your dreams!
