What Have I Been Playing? - Zuma's Revenge (PC)

Casual games seemed to fallen out of the limelight in the last several months. No doubt they are doing superbly well still, but there was a time when you heard a lot about the "Housewife/husband" video games. Games like Peggle, Bejeweled and of course Zuma.

Zuma's Revenge's concept is a marvelous take on the connect-3 category. The idea is that you have unfortunately be washed ashore a dangerous island inhabited by several evil deities, and you defeat them all by clearing tracks of different lengths and patterns before the first ball reaches the skull. You do this by linking 3 or more balls of the same colour which blows them up, filling up the bar at the top. The higher scores you achieve, the faster the bar fills up. Easy.

What makes it more entertaining are the powerups available. You can shoot individual balls off the rail, fire off 3 demolition balls at once, zap all the balls of your chosen colour, or rewind the snake back into the entrance cave... no pun intended.
I am so sure that you do not want to lick this toad.

The game is actually very well crafted. At the start, the trail is very straigtht forward and simple. Little obstacles, and is over in moments. Later levels see the trail spiralling, crossing over itself, and essentially blocking your path, meaning forward planning if you want a higher score. Once you have finished the game, probably in under 2 hours, challenges await for you to get the highest score on a particular level. Also there is the Iron Frog challenge. Not played that properly yet, but I got the impression on first glance that it is a ruthless tail of balls that you need to clear to get to the next level.

Now in the world of casual games, jazzy lights, plinky-plonky sounds, and more colours than the United Nation are a big plus. Not only that, but this is highly addictive. Each level can be completed in about 45 seconds if you are good, and its simplicity only lies in how seriously you want to take it.

Basically, off the Steam Store  for under £10, if you fancy something potentially a little different. I would recommend it.
